Many scholars in South Africa do not have toilets on their school premises and must walk lengthy distances to reach run down pit latrines, where their health and safety is at risk. In the past few years the use of pit latrines has ended in death for some children who had no other option.

Media Hack teamed up with Section 27 to investigate this problem. We collected all the data we could find on schools with or without water, toilets and pit toilets, while Section 27 visited 86 schools in Limpopo to do visual checks. We then compared these checks with the public data released by the government to check for discrepancies. View the full project here.
