In South Africa  approximately 8.5 million people tune into a community radio station for news or entertainment at some point during their week. However, basic information about the sector is largely unknown and difficult to come by. Though it is estimated that there are around 200 working community radio stations in the country.

In 2019 the Wits Radio Academy set out to survey community radio stations to get a better understanding of the makeup and operations of these stations. Ultimately, Wits Radio Academy was able to survey 68 stations in detail.

Using the survey results as well as data on the stations not surveyed, Media Hack created an interactive map to visualise the state of community radio in South Africa. Using the map readers can view information on radio stations such as budgets, staffing and focus areas.

This project was produced for the Wits Radio Academy.
