South Africa’s first confirmed COVID-19 infection was announced on March 5 2020. The infected man was part of a group of 10 people who had just returned from a trip to Italy. Ten days later, on March 15, with confirmed infections reaching 61, the president declared a national state of disaster and put in place measures to contain the spread of the virus.

Media Hack created a dashboard to track the officially confirmed cases of COVID-19 infection as they were announced by the Department of Health. These numbers reflect infections only among people who have been tested for the virus – there may be others who are infected who never get tested, but it is impossible to know this number for sure. The dashboard deals with what is known, which is officially confirmed infections.
